We are working through the design of a new performance-linked bonus at AirportLabs.

I walked into that conversation expecting the usual questions. How do we hit the targets. How big are the numbers.

That is not what happened. The team spent the time on a different question. Is this the right incentive, or are we trading long-term sustainability for a short-term number.

I have been building this company for eleven years. You can hire for a lot of things. That instinct, to protect the long game when there is money on the table, is not one you can write into a job description.

Monday: Anthropic launched the most capable AI model ever made generally available. Thursday: the US government ordered it pulled. Every customer, everywhere, same afternoon.

Airports are handling record passenger volumes. And non-aeronautical revenue per passenger is going down, not up.

About 37% of airport income is non-aero. It still sits below 2019. It is projected to grow at roughly 3%, almost entirely on volume. Yield per head is flat to falling. Growth by crowd, not by value.

A customer told me, recently, that he was told gate allocation at an airport is rather like playing Tetris. And on the surface, this is a wonderful metaphor. The pieces fall. You slot them in. The rows clear. You score points. Marvellous.

The trouble is, Tetris is a very, very good video game. Possibly the most elegant video game ever designed. And gate allocation is not a game at all.

Our team published something today that I have been wanting to write for a while: Resilience over Recovery: The AODB’s Role in Managing “Black Swan” Events.

The argument is simple. The industry is shifting from recovery (how fast do we get back to normal) to resilience (how do we absorb shocks without breaking). ICAO has named the shift. ACI World’s 2026 priority report demands “heightened authority on data and innovation.” Eurocontrol’s Seven-Year Forecast (2026–2032) tells us European airspace has shrunk by roughly 6% since 2019, forcing systemic rerouting and constant volatility across the corridors that remain.

Something I’ve been thinking about that I wanted to share with the team (and with anyone building software).

We all know AI is mostly compute, and compute is mostly energy. Here’s the part that’s less obvious:

Energy can’t move instantly. But a lot of AI workloads can.

Solar and wind produce power that’s hard to store. When they overproduce, the price drops - sometimes it goes negative. Utilities pay large consumers to take excess off the grid.

They ran a scalability test: 2,000+ flights per hour. Hundreds of concurrent users. Messages, reports, integrations, the full stack under load.

I’m told this was “a fairly standard setup.” I’m choosing not to question that.

For context, the busiest airport on the planet handles about 130 flights per hour under ideal conditions. That airport is O’Hare. They’re a customer.

Everything worked.

Weird flex but ok.

În 2025 AirportLabs a adăugat peste 45 de clienți noi, trecând de 100 de aeroporturi. Echipa noastră a lansat în Republica Dominicană (toate aeroporturile). În Mexic (13 aeroporturi), iar Dubai și O’Hare rulează suita noastră completă de produse.

Toate astea se proiectează, se construiesc, se operează, se promovează și se vând de la Cluj.

Dacă vrei ca munca ta să aibă impact direct - nu la nivel de concept, ci la nivel de operațiuni reale în aeroporturi care procesează milioane de pasageri - s-ar putea să te intereseze ce avem noi de oferit.

If you’re in enterprise software, you’ve heard this phrase. Usually from someone in a sales presentation. Usually it means “we haven’t tested the upper limit and we’d rather you didn’t either.”

So when our Allegra RMS product manager Rares Ignatescu said it to a room full of airport executives - I had to check. I run AirportLabs. If my team claims something, I want it to be true.

A bit of background. We introduced all-inclusive licensing 11 years ago. Everything included, no limits, fixed price. We did this because the system was built cloud-native from day one. Not “we migrated it to the cloud” cloud. Actual cloud-native. The kind where infrastructure scales like a website and you don’t punish your customer for growing.

To recap this roller-coaster week: it was a reminder that “the cloud” is still made of buildings, cables and people on the ground.

An airport has a fixed number of gates, stands, check-in desks, baggage belts, and jet bridges. The flight schedule changes constantly - delays, diversions, cancellations, early arrivals, weather. A dynamic Resource Management System takes all of those moving parts and allocates them in real time, solving conflicts before they become problems.

That’s different from a static plan. A static plan says “Flight 402 gets Gate 14 at 09:00.” A dynamic RMS says “Flight 402 will be 35 minutes late, Gate 14 is needed for a widebody at 09:20 - here’s the best reallocation across all affected flights, gates, and stands, optimised for minimum towing, maximum contact stands, on-time departure, commercial objectives, PRM requirements, etc, etc…”

The “Cloud” is still physical. From a business continuity and architecture standpoint, this is a stark reminder of why relying on a single data centre - or even a single infrastructure provider - is not a robust plan for high availability. Physical and geopolitical risks are real.

Building true multi-region, multi-provider platforms is an absolute necessity for critical systems.

But at the end of the day, servers can be replaced and infrastructure can be rebuilt; human lives cannot.

Air New Zealand cited engine availability as a major factor in pre-tax profit falling over 60% in one year. Air Astana took a $24 million hit to summer earnings from the same engine issues.

The airframes were fine. The problem was having no alternative when the one engine type you depended on went into crisis.

Apparently there's a tension in tech right now: companies are adopting AI fast, and at the same time cutting the pipeline of junior talent.

Apparently there’s a tension in tech right now: companies are adopting AI fast, and at the same time cutting the pipeline of junior talent. The logic seems to be that AI handles the simple work, so you only need seniors.

I don’t buy that.

At AirportLabs, AI is part of how we work - from business analysis to code to operations. We’re not experimenting; it’s in production.

But we’re also growing juniors, every year, because we’ve been doing this for eleven years and we know what it takes to build a team that lasts. Seniors don’t appear from nowhere. They come from juniors who got real projects, real responsibility, and real mentorship. Juniors that learn to use tools, including tools like AI.

În AirportLabs punem preț pe stabilitate, însă creșterea constantă ne-a arătat că cerem unui singur rol să acopere o arie prea largă. Așa că am luat decizia strategică de a împărți responsabilitățile.

Căutăm un Project Portfolio Manager.

Este un rol cu raportare directă la mine. Nu căutăm “middle management”, ci ownership total pe zona de Delivery.

Honestly, this is a good thing. You might be surprised to learn that 99.9% availability actually translates to almost 9 hours of downtime a year – and that downtime isn’t spread out evenly.

With passenger traffic steadily increasing, any system downtime has a major impact on airport operations. The ripple effects are felt long after the systems are back online. Delays snowball, passengers are stranded, and the airport’s reputation takes a hit.

It’s been almost 9 years since AirportLabs launched the Airport Community App and I’ve just noticed that now we send over 40 million push notifications per month.

At the time, replacing SMS was just a basic goal. We had a much bigger vision. Growing up in a time when flying was a luxury most people couldn’t afford, we’re driven to make aviation efficient.

Today, by saving our customers over 2 million euros a month in SMS costs alone, we’re making aviation more accessible. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about connecting people and making the world a little smaller.

Think about it: the more manual input your system requires, the more interfaces you need to build.SkyCore AODB is different. We minimize manual input by automating key processes and streamlining data flow.

This means fewer interfaces, less human error, and increased efficiency.

I’ve always been drawn to innovative management concepts. The promise of holocracy & self-organizing teams was alluring.

However, my experience revealed its flaws.

My intention isn’t to preach, but to share these hard-earned lessons, so others can avoid the same challenges. I want to ensure that good, capable people aren’t unfairly disadvantaged or driven away by organizational missteps.

The pitfalls of structurelessness:

Emergence of informal hierarchies: Power dynamics still emerge, often favoring the most vocal, not necessarily the most capable.
Suppression of quiet competence: Talented individuals who prefer collaboration over self-promotion can become marginalized, often leading to their departure.
Inefficiency & conflict: Without clear roles & decision-making processes, teams struggle to execute effectively, leading to frustration & internal strife.
Burdening of specialists: Highly capable individuals in specific areas may find themselves pulled into day-to-day management tasks they don’t enjoy or excel at.

I’ve noticed that the disaster recovery requirements stipulated in contracts often demand service recovery within 24h. This timeline appears to be far from the operational needs of airports and the capabilities available today.

Our team at AirportLabs conducted an exercise involving the complete construction of the AODB in a new data centre and the full recovery of data in just 45 minutes. We believe that this is closer to what disaster recovery timelines should be.

Yesterday’s global outage of the Lufthansa systems caught me with the entire family waiting for a LH flight in Munich Airport.

Disruptions are always interesting to me, because I get to see where AirportLabs systems add value - and as expected we saw a DOUBLING in usage of the Community App vs a regular Wednesday in Lufthansa heavy airports.

While airports communicated well with the app we also got to experience the effects of lack of effective communication means in Lufthansa: the boarding agent was close to tears, hanging on the phone, trying to find out what to do next and getting nowhere for hours.

• We managed to build and implement 9 products¹ (and I really mean products with everything a product entails) - each one more complex than the previous, but all of them with a focus to make aviation more efficient and accessible to a larger population. • There wouldn’t be an AirportLabs if it weren’t for the people who make it up. There’s almost 70 of us now. Each team member is a well rounded individual who believes in achievement, in hard work and who has a winning attitude. The AirportLabs team went for a cool 6k race this weekend and got some very decent results: 4'14"/km best average pace. (My pace was a much worse 5'48"/km)

We even made it on the front cover of the event with our iconic new t-shirt design developed by our in-house design team (which obviously can do more than just software)!

Many years ago I was working on the client side (i.e. for an airport management company) building the specifications for the systems of a brand new terminal.

It was meant to be passenger-centric, efficient and data driven in decision making and also easy to run from an IT perspective.

It was a good design. Yet, specifications are not enough, the systems you need must be provided by someone. When we went out to buy those systems, nothing from what we wanted was available on the market.

More than twice a second (on average) but sometimes 50 times per second (during major events)...

As an engineer, I am always amazed that proposed solutions that rely on years of experience, research, testing, sleepless nights and stacks of documentation and numbers are sctutinized beyond belief, opposed with the most inane arguments and quickly forgotten but on the other hand, made up statistics, pie-in-the-sky numbers or weak conjectures are accepted by everybody, hang around for years unchallenged and end up in business cases and news.

Am citit articolul aseara. Conform legii lui Betteridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betteridge%27s_Law_of_Headlines) raspunsul este nu. Ce am mai observant e ca articolul e scris de L.C. din Bucuresti, care in mod evident e roman/romanca. Articolul e scris asa si asa si engleza e indoielnica.

Repeta aceleasi ineptii cum ca romanii ar fi mai ‘dotati’ ca alte natii, nu stiu de unde provine idea asta dar in cartea “IQ and the Wealth of Nations” (criticata si ea, ce-i drept) Romania e estimate pe un tragic loc 34 cu un IQ mediu de 94. Din pacate scorurile din carte reflecta destul de bine segregarea est-vest si noi suntem in estul cu IQ mai scazut.

Am incercat in repetate randuri sa angajez romani pe proiectele pe care am lucrat. Fie in UK, US sau acum in UAE, mereu au fost oportunitati mai mult sau mai putin avantajoase in domeniul IT.

Pana acum n-am avut prea mult succes. Nu vorbesc de gasirea unor persoane calificate, de cele mai multe ori nici macar nu am ajuns in acea faza. Vorbesc de interesul exprimat de comunitate. Am dat anunturi pe linkedin, pe grupurile alumni de pe la politehnici si pe la cunostinte. De fiecare data raspunsul a fost foarte slab si rar am primit un CV.
